The Tony Jennings Memorial Handicap Run is usually held at the end of December each year.
It takes place at The Mountain Air Car Park, Upper Cwmbran, NP4 5XZ and is about 4.5 miles of tough off-road running, ending with a social event at a pub afterwards. The first runner starts at 11am. This is NOT AN OFFICIAL RACE but a handicap social run for Fairwater Runners Cwmbran members only, plus a few invited guests. Runners are started based on their previous years time. We ask new runners to bring an up to date 5 mile road time so we can work out a start time. All new runners will be given the across-the-line position they achieve unless first home. The winner will be the first to cross the line who started based on the previous years time.
We run in memory of Tony Jennings. Tony was a keen member of Fairwater for some years and when he finally hung up his daps he still supported us and his son Mark who was until recently also a long term member of the club. Tony would marshal and cheer the club on no matter what the weather and would pop up in the most remote spots, as he felt this was where we would need a lift the most.
We had done this very challenging club handicap run for a number of years as a bit of fun in the Christmas break, so when we lost Tony in the early hours of New Years Day 2005 at the way-too-young age of 59, it was obvious to all members without taking a vote that we would name the run The Tony Jennings Memorial Handicap Run as a mark of respect to him and his family. We wont forget you Tony.
